Fort Langley

Earlier this week I dragged J away from his study for one morning to explore a very cute nearby town – Fort Langley. It has a lot of history, which I don’t know much about it. What I do know, though, is that it is full of antique shops, kitchen stores (oh the self control I am practicing!), coffee roasters…

…Local produce stores, such as a whole one dedicated to locally grown cranberries.

Seeming as Langley is apparently famous for its cranberry farms, we treated ourselves to a jar of Jalapeno Cranberry Jelly. Can’t wait to try it with baked brie and bread sticks!

… And goood cafes!

It’s been almost two weeks since we moved here and we just had our first espresso! I’m not going to say anything negative about drip coffee, because this is a significant part of Canadian coffee culture and we hate to be complaining, comparing foreigners, but boy it was nice to sip a good strong espresso! Although we had to request no whipped cream, and could barely finish the huge mug it came in, it was pretty darn good.

Hey, you know what? Coffees aren’t served with teaspoons here!

Oh, and we are totally sold on the famous Canadian butter tart!

We lunched at a VERY nice bistro, and were treated exceptionally well. I thought it was because we are so lovely, being ‘Kiwis’ (it’s a fruit here, eh?) and all. But J reminded me that they expect a tip. Gee – perhaps we should bring tipping into NZ if it means you get such good service – my water glass never got below halfway!

J is straight back into the books – but it was nice to have a chance to explore and make the most of our stay in a city much more civilised than where we expect to be in two weeks!
